These 92 sketches of the water realized on sheets of paper measuring 21 x 29,5 cm by Greenaway for the artbook Tulse Luper in Venice in 2004.
Regular waves, violent storms, perfect tempests, wetlands and floods spring from the white pages, while endless variations of black are the backdrop for shades of dark and light blue in this original tribute to the water that is also an indirect tribute to Venice, to the Lagoon and to cinema.
The majority of the drawings are of waves, but there also explicit references and veiled quotes to numbers and letters. At his home in Amsterdam (the Venice of the North), Greenaway created the drawings using black ink diluted with light and dark blue, brown and sepia to make the shadings more dynamic and the nuances more mysterious.
